Family Road Trip
Road trip time. You are brave. But you haven't made the final decision as to go or stay home. In your mind you have visions of seeing the biggest ball of twine or Mount Rushmore, however, your nightmare of "Are we there yet?" is keeping you from making the leap. You are questioning your own strength, can I make it with two kids in the car for 18 hours? Will the smell of old vomit from the cotton candy and peanut butter experement send you over the edge? Do I really want to admit to the public that my child enjoys wearing a sunglasses in the shape of penguins? Did I mention they're neon orange?
Ahhh... focus on the fun memories you will create and let's get planning to make this a successful outing.
First you've got to plan ahead. Use the internet to do research in finding the most interesting places to stop. Parks and museums can be a great way to have an "eduational" experience, not to mention the opportunity to get out of the car and stretch your legs.
Leave early. It's almost impossible to force your kids to sleep because they're so exicted thinking about the trip. So pull a fast one on them. Leave at 4am, they'll get in the car and immediately sleep. The first part of the trip is snooze city. When they wake up, it will be new, fun, exciting and time for breakfast!
Work to keep the kids engaged to make the arguments in the backseat less likely. Have a suprise bag - stop at a dollar store and wrap up some cheap items. Each hour or after so many miles they get a new suprise. Make it a toy they can play with... it will entertain them for at least 15 minutes. Bring lots of DVD's. And you do have the incentive quarter game. Start them out with a pile of quarters, when they're good, give them a quarter, when they're bad, take one away... this also keeps them from asking you for money!
Besides, pillows, blankets, and they're video games (on mute), bring the old fashioned car bingo type games - nothing is better than searching for the illusive cop... that might actually be a handy use for your back seat bundles of joy.
Don't be suprised if the back seat duo vomits. It's going to happen. They didn't get to this age by remaining puke free! Bring barf bags, crackers, soda water, what ever you know helps them feel comforted. Also bring your favorite odor killer because even though you have your barf bag, you just know they're not going to make it... that's part of the fun of the family road trip!
Do all the planning as you will... but just remember, as long as you have plenty of room on your camera to take those photos that will embarass the kiddo's in about 5 years... the trip will be a success!
